Alumni express love for Carver Center – Norwalk Citizen.
Lewis Rawles remembers going to the George Washington Carver Community Center when it was just a house in South Norwalk.
“I’m old-school Carver,” Rawles, 70, now a Bloomfield resident, said at a kickoff event Feb. 22 for a newly formed Carver Alumni Association that coincides with the center’s 75th anniversary. “I’m with the original Carver that was on Ann Street. That was where it started out.
“All we had was a house — it was a community center in a house on Ann Street.”
Rawles, who attended Carver as a child in the 1950s, said kids mostly played board games at the community center because there was nothing else to do. But Rawles said he learned how to get along with people and had a fun time.
